In travel, for the most part, it's true...the early bird gets the worm! Planning early for Christmas/Winter, Spring Break and Summer Vacations typically gets you the best pricing and availability! Many of the major airlines allow bookings 330 days in advance, although others like Southwest only allow booking 6 months in advance.
While LAST MINUTE DEALS are often advertised closer to the travel dates, those deals have typically already had price increases, so any discounts that have been applied, usually don't make it any less expensive than if you had booked far in advance! AND those deals may have less desirable flights...layovers or late arrival times...both cutting into YOUR vacation!
For people who can be flexible in their travel plans, yes, there are deals to be had from time to time. I recently got a fantastic fare from O'Hare to San Francisco to $99pp roundtrip, which I JUMPED on! Those type of deals usually sell out fast, so you have to move quickly. If you keep me in the loop about a particular location you would be interested in visiting, I can ALERT you if and when a GREAT DEAL comes along!
